Conservation Through Tourism
DbD was instrumental in the planning and design of the Madison River Park, a whitewater recreation area that opened in May 2021. Located along a historic stretch of the Dan River in Madison, North Carolina, this unique setting is expected to become a popular destination for thousands of visitors each year and to provide a much-needed boom for the local economy. This work is also considered critical for protection of the Roanoke Logperch, a federally endangered fish species native to the Dan River. By removing the original Lyndsey Bridge Dam here and replacing it with an engineered system of weirs and small waterfalls, the fish can now migrate further upstream and access more than fifty additional miles of river habitat important to their survival. The Madison River Park project is exemplary of how conservation efforts and tourism development can be mutually beneficial and an attractive solution to a complex issue.
